Bast is the Egyptian goddess of home and hearth, of secrets kept by women, of cats, fertility, and childbirth, watched over the dwellings of humans against the forces of malevolence and disease, particularly for women and kids.

She was also a patroness of the afterlife, oftentimes taking on the guise of a guide or helper to the dead. Born of the sun god Ra, she was related in legend to the Eye of Ra, a symbol of omniscience, and to the Distant Goddess, who left Ra and returned to bring transformation. So beloved was Bastet of ancient Egyptians, for she promised to guard and shield them and their homes and families.
