The besom is used in ritual to cast a circle, to close a circle, to banish, to cleanse, to purify, and to sweep away negative energy. The witch's besom should always be worked in deosil (clockwise) turning from east to west in the direction of the sun to cleanse, and worked in wittershins (counter-clockwise) to banish.
