The Ourobouros Phylactery is a protective amulet against physical and spiritual harm. It comes from the Greek Magical Papyri (PGM), a collection of magical spells and formulae from Greco-Roman Egypt, written between the second century BCE and the fifth century CE by working magicians. These amulets are made and consecrated according to the tecnhiques prescribed in the PGM and on suitable days according to the Egyptian magical calendar. They should be worn or carried. As papyrus is a material best suited to dry climates, it is best to ensure that the amulet does not get wet. The translation of the text accompanying the formula for creating the amulet in PGM VII.579-90 describes it as a "phylactery, a bodyguard against daimons, against phantasms, against every sickenss and suffering”.
